iPads in Music 49S

Brenda S. Scott, Adjunct Assistant Professor and Curator of the Duke University Musical Instrument Collection, Department of Music

Project Description:

During the Spring 2011 semester, Professor Brenda Scott used iPads in her course Music 49S, Bach, Beethoven and Brahms.  Designed for non-music majors, the class introduces the basics of reading music, understanding scores and the structure of musical works, and the roles of instruments in the orchestra through the study of works by the three composers.

In the course, students use the app ForScore to annotate scores of works during listening assignments during class and used the device for readings, web reference access, and music apps such as a metronome and tuner.

Project start date: January 2011
