The Center for Applied Research and Design in Transformative Education (CARADITE) is Duke’s think-tank and living laboratory for innovative research and design about transformative education. We explore critical questions across lifetime learning journeys, spanning pre-college through post-career. And we design human(e)-centered and equity-directed solutions for next generation learning and development. CARADITE also serves as a hub to connect and grow a Duke community engaged in research and public discourse about transformative education.
The interdisciplinary Center is housed at Duke Learning Innovation and Lifetime Education (LILE), and was founded through generous support from the Social Science Research Institute, the Office of the Vice Provost for the Libraries, and the Office of the Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies.

- Iterative Research: We work as a living laboratory for all facets of iterative, design-based educational research and development. Our initiatives respond to complex needs and far-reaching possibilities and contribute to more inclusive learning futures.
- Human(e)-Centered Inquiry: We seek insight and meaning as human-centered researchers and trusted thought partners. Our studies, programming, and products cultivate student-focused and equity-directed practices and nuanced understanding about transformative education, including the social justice implications of technology.
- Open Sharing: We are a catalyst accelerating new knowledge about teaching and learning as well as new methods for research that privilege community and caring engagement. Our ethos is open–we share what and how we learn and disseminate public-facing scholarship.

CARADITE catalyzes transformative education research by administering multiple grant programs, co-designing equity-oriented teaching and learning, and supporting Duke faculty with research projects.
Fostering Collaboration
CARADITE fosters collaboration with Duke faculty and various campus departments and initiatives, as well as with cross-sector partners including K-12 educators, industry leaders, and government organizations.
