Duke Today recently highlighted two new online courses for undergraduates available at the university. The Center for Instructional Technology is consulting with the faculty teaching the courses, Kristen Stephens in the Program in Education and Cathy Shuman in English.
This is the first time that online courses have been offered for undergraduates at Duke. The CIT is assisting the faculty members with planning for technology support for the courses and designing course activities that are effective in an online environment.
Shuman’s course, dealing with creative writing and civic engagement, is integrated with the students’s Duke Engage experience. The course taught by Kristen Stephens, looking at federal policy issues affecting teachers, is being made available to allow Duke students to earn course credit at Duke even though they might not be in the Durham area during the summer.
The CIT is also assisting the faculty with developing assessment of the courses to help the university understand the resources required for quality online course offerings and ways to preserve the close working relationship between faculty and students that are an integral part of the Duke experience.
The CIT blog will have updates on the courses later in the year.
