Announcing the 2024 – 2025 Bass Digital Education Fellows

Learning Innovation and Lifetime Education (LILE) is excited to announce the 6th cohort of Bass Digital Education Fellows, Duke PhD students participating in a co-curricular internship experience with our team. The Bass Digital Education Fellowship Program, offered in partnership with the Duke Graduate School, provides training for graduate students to develop new skills to distinguish themselves in the academic job market and to explore emerging career paths in digital teaching and learning. As part of the fellowship experience, each Fellow will design, develop and execute a substantial digital project, under the guidance of colleagues from Faculty Development and Applied Research, Learning Experience Design, and Learning Technology. 

The fellowship program is designed to adapt to faculty needs, solve teaching challenges, and engage multiple stakeholders in education, with the Fellows as trained collaborators and partners. Fellows collaborate on digital projects to advance teaching innovation and to grow the digital pedagogy community at Duke.

Digital Education Fellows

This year’s cohort of Fellows have a strong background in digital learning and online course design, in addition to Duke teaching experience.

  • Suhyen Bae, PhD candidate, Political Science: Project: Evidence-based Practice in Digital Pedagogy and Active Learning
  • Sam Hunnicutt, PhD candidate, Romance Studies; Project: Designing High Quality Digital Learning Experiences for Undergraduate Teaching
  • Eun-hae Kim, PhD candidate, English; Project: Faculty Resources for Digital Learning: Canvas Templates and a Digital Pedagogy Collaboration Site

The multidisciplinary background of each Fellow contributes to the internship experience. Eun-hae Kim has taught ENGLISH 90S: Special Topics in Literature and is a Preparing Future Faculty Fellow. Sam Hunnicutt has taught several courses at Duke, including an undergraduate online course during Summer Session (Spanish 203). Sam has been a recipient of the Center for Documentary Studies Fellowship. Suhyen Bae is a past Kenan Institute for Ethics Teaching On Purpose Fellow

Program Experience

Sophia Stone, EdD, leads the digital education fellowship program for LILE and oversees the collaboration with the Graduate School. All Fellows meet as a cohort and develop a project proposal by enrolling in GS772: Bass Digital Education Fellowship Colloquium. The Fellows’ internships are undertaken in partnership with their project advisors, who have specific expertise in the project area, guiding Fellows through all stages of the project, from design to implementation. A project reviewer provides feedback on the final project, rounding out the cross-functional team collaboration. This year’s LILE project team includes:

  • Anna Levina, PhD, Canvas Analyst, Learning Technology (Project Advisor)
  • Xinzhu Wang, MS, STEM Teaching Consultant, Teaching Innovation (Project Advisor)

Prior to beginning their internship, all Fellows enroll in GS762: Digital Pedagogy, which earns credit for the Graduate School’s Certificate in College Teaching Program. Once the fellowship program concludes, Fellows are awarded transcript designation as Bass Digital Education Fellows. Offered in partnership with the Duke Graduate School, the program has been preparing graduate students for careers in digital teaching and learning since the inaugural Fellows cohort joined in 2019.
