Duke Learning Innovation recently partnered with the Duke Department of Population Health Sciences to offer a year-long fellowship for departmental faculty teaching in the Master’s Program. A Learning Innovation consulting team, with expertise in course design, active learning, and learning technologies, worked with program faculty on course design efforts and provided consulting sessions to faculty for their course development needs throughout the academic year.
Faculty fellows worked collaboratively over an intensive one-day institute to draft their course plan and syllabus for a course they planned to teach in the upcoming academic year. Faculty engaged in a multi-session program consisting of the full-day workshop, interactive sessions and discussions, with follow-up office hours taking place on-site. In addition to the full-day course design institute, Spring 2019 sessions were offered on Active Learning, Great Group Work, and Using Sakai for teaching.
A highlight of the fellowship is the collaborative opportunity faculty had to come together with their peers to develop their syllabi and course plan while gathering feedback from one another.

Each participant received a copy of the book Creating Significant Learning Experiences: An Integrated Approach to Designing College Courses by L. Dee Fink, and a set of course design resources for use after the Institute, as well as information on technology and academic support resources available at Duke. The faculty program was led by teaching innovation consultants Elise Mueller, Randy Riddle, and Sophia Stone.
