Teaching Assistants (TAs) Share Strategies for Engaging Students in Large Classes on March 11

Learn from a panel of experienced TA graduate students on “Engaging Students in Large Classes with Active Learning”— register now!

The panel includes experienced graduate students who have been Teaching Assistants (TAs)  and/or have been Instructors of Record (IOR) from engineering, social sciences and the humanities. TAs will share their experiences and the active learning techniques they have used to engage learners in large classes, both in-person and virtual. Participants will also learn strategies to collaborate with co-TAs in the same class, strategies to “crowd-source” solutions, resources to support students and active learning pedagogies to build community in online, hybrid and face-to-face classes. Registration is handled through the graduate school.

Lauren Heckelman headshot

Lauren Heckelman is a fourth-year Ph.D. candidate in biomedical engineering (BME). She is a life-long Blue Devil, having previously obtained her B.S.E. and M.S. degrees in BME from Duke in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Dayton Kinney headshot

Dayton Kinney is a sixth-year Ph.D. candidate in Music Composition. Dayton has served as a TA and instructor of record for four years with additional experience prior to her time at Duke. She is currently a Bass Digital Education Fellow, active within the Certificate in College Teaching and a previous Preparing Future Faculty Fellow. Qingran Li headshot

Qingran Li is a Ph.D. candidate in Environmental Policy. She works in the interdisciplinary field of environmental and energy economics. She has been a TA for multiple courses in the Sanford School of Public Policy. Qingran is a current Bass Digital Education Fellow and is working on an online teaching project for the Climate Change Economics and Policy course.
