DE SIG @ Duke February Session to Focus on Accessibility and State Authorization Updates

The grassroots Distance Education Special Interest Group at Duke (DE SIG @Duke) meets every other month to discuss a range of distance education topics. The group is open to anyone at Duke with an interest in distance education; participants come from all units at Duke and include instructors, program directors and coordinators, IT directors and staff, instructional designers, eLearning product developers, and academic technology consultants. The primary topics of discussions  are program administration, pedagogy, and technology.

Join us at our February session, as we focus on two important topics:

Session Topics: 1) Accessibility of Learning Environments and Content, 2) State Authorization Updates

Description:  This session will feature two separate topics. For the first 10 minutes, Hunter Stokes, Manager, Educational Compliance, will discuss Duke’s ongoing compliance efforts to meet state authorization of distance education regulations. Then, for approximately 30 minutes, Dot Mishoe, Director, Student Disability Access Office will discuss accessibility, leaving plenty of time for questions. Changes to the federal law (Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, which deals with the accessibility of electronic and information technology) are expected to happen sometime this year or early next year. The changes will affect how various schools and units at Duke develop and deliver their learning environments and content. These changes are not exclusive to education and/or distance education; however, given the heavy reliance of technology in distance education, we will discuss the expected changes in this context. The last half of the meeting will be an open discussion, any topic for discussion is welcome.
