Learning that Lasts – Peter Felten
9:00 am, Gothic Reading Room, Rubenstein Library
The university can and should be a life-changing place for students. Too often, however, students drift through the academy, learning little that lasts. This interactive talk will explore research into the nature and qualities of university experiences that challenge students to develop the knowledge, skills, and commitments that will allow them to thrive in a rapidly changing world. While we cannot guarantee student transformation, certain practices create conditions that foster deep learning.
Peter Felten is Assistant Provost for Teaching and Learning, Executive Director of the Center for Engaged Learning, and Professor of History at Elon University. His publications include the co-authored books Transforming Students: Fulfilling the Promise of Higher Education (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2014) and Engaging Students as Partners in Learning and Teaching (Jossey-Bass, 2014). He is president-elect of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and co-editor of the International Journal for Academic Development.
