Open Educational Resources, iPads and Team-Based Learning in Honors Chemistry
In Fall 2011, students in one section of Honors Chemistry (Chem 43) were offered open electronic resources as an alternative to a textbook, provided with iPads, and taught using team-based learning instead of the traditional lecture. There were sufficient quantities of openly available materials of good quality to cover the topics of a traditional course, and these materials were supplemented when necessary or desired with Duke-created content. Students found these useful, but also consulted a traditional text. Some students found the iPad very useful, and others did not use it at all. Team-based learning was well-received by the students.
