We are pleased to share with you the 2024-2025 cohort of Emerging Pedagogies Seed Grant recipients and Faculty Fellows. These faculty are reimagining how, where, when, and with whom learning happens; exploring what 21st century Duke learning experiences can look like and need to be; and are developing their knowledge or creating scholarship about emerging pedagogies. They will advance our efforts to expand the scope of who are considered “Duke learners” to include those beyond traditional undergraduate and graduate students, and ensure all Duke-provided learning experiences in any modality are well-designed, learner-centered, and apply evidence-based innovative pedagogies. This program is in support of the Duke 2030 goals and ambitions to transform teaching and learning at Duke.
Seed Grant Recipients
The Seed Grant recipients will conduct applied research, develop scholarship of teaching and learning, and/or prototype a project focused on an issue relevant to emerging pedagogies. Their proposed research questions address a specific educational problem, demonstrate knowledge of the state of the existing scholarship on the topic, and seek to develop an early-stage solution deliverable that can be built upon in future work. This year’s recipients are:
- Megan Madonna (Biomedical Engineering): Strengthening Community and Engineering Identity through Human-centered Design
- Michelle Webb (School of Nursing) and Jennie De Gagne (School of Nursing): Video Elicitation: An Innovative Teaching Strategy to Enhance Interpersonal Skills in Virtual Healthcare Environments
- Thomas Newpher (Psychology and Neuroscience) and Minna Ng (Psychology and Neuroscience): The Neuroscience Teaching Lab: Impacts on Student Self-Efficacy and Engagement in Neuroscience Research
Faculty Fellows
Each Fellow will assemble and lead a small (6-10 member) professional learning community interested in deepening its understanding and practice of an issue relevant to emerging pedagogies priorities as listed above. The inaugural Fellows are:
- George Delagrammatikas (Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science): Reimagining the Role and Impact of Humanistic Design through a Community of Practice at Duke University
- Cambey Mikush (Occupational Therapy): A Community of Educators Applying Design Thinking to Identify and Source High-Impact, Experiential Student Projects
- Rebecca Simmons (Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science) and Karen Weber (University Scholars and Fellows): Exploring Digital Badges for Enhancing ePortfolio Practice
