Through the course of the pandemic our support and faculty development strategy continued to evolve. The initial emergency remote teaching effort (which at Duke, like other institutions we initially framed as Keep Teaching) was the “best we could do,” given the limited time and constraints of the Spring 2020 pandemic, to help faculty translate face-to-face activities and content to a remote setting in an emergency. As the pandemic moved from initial system shock to a sustained public and global health crisis, we re-envisioned our strategy — focusing on what we called “flexible teaching” — which starts with the principles of course design to create a flexible, resilient course that can withstand any change in modality or delivery. Flexible teaching remains our long-term strategy for influencing and supporting the overall success of Duke courses during the pandemic – be they online, hybrid, remote, temporarily remote and/or in-person.
